The Celica, with which Toyota launched a new genre of special cars, debuted in 1970. With its release, it gained great popularity due to its stylish shape and "full choice" system. In addition, the Celica was also used as a primary vehicle in motorsports, and its success generated more popularity. In particular, the Celica also competed in the World Rally Championship on behalf of Toyota Team Europe led by Ove Anderson, who was also a rally driver. The capabilities of the Celica model were demonstrated and raised its reputation worldwide.
The first generation of the Celica model debuted in the RAC rally in November 1972. Subsequently, the Celica rally model changed in response to the Celica facelift. In the middle of the 1988 season, the Celica was reborn with a fourth-generation Celica. This was the Celica GT-FOUR (ST165), which Toyota used as the base vehicle in response to the end of Group B rallying and the move to Group A. The Celica GT-FOUR's engine has a displacement of 1988 cc and an inline four-cylinder engine with a turbocharger. An important feature of the Celica GT-FOUR was the use of the advanced British XTRAC 4WD control system, which provided optimal torque distribution to the four wheels depending on road conditions.
However, since the Celica, which was chosen as the base vehicle for rally racing, was not originally designed for rally racing, it took a lot of effort to develop. The Celica GT-FOUR made its World Rally debut in 1988 and competed in full-scale rallying from 1989. Although the Celica ST165 was completed after many tests, troubles in actual competition were inevitable and required further efforts. The effort paid off in 1990. The drivers were Carlos Sainz, Armin Schwarz and Mikael Ericsson, who finally showed their skills. Carlos Sainz won the 1990 WRC driver's title and brought Toyota its first world titles. In 1991, Carlos Sainz won the first round of the Monte Carlo and Portugal Rally. In the fifth round, Sainz won, and Marc Duez of the Toyota Fina Team also took fourth place in the Tour de Corse. The Celica ST165 has earned a reputation as a championship rally car. The Celica ST165, which competed on the rally scene with many crews and drivers at the time Toyota decided to enter the full-scale World Rally Championship, was trained for many races and grew into a rally masterpiece.
