CITROËN management believed that the standard of living of the French and Europeans was rising. The 2 CV model had just been successfully launched and a successor to the 15 and 11 CV models had to be found. The VGD (Large Series Car) project began to emerge, with the first designs dating back to 1945. André LEFEBVRE, who became project manager, decided that the car should be innovative in every way. The body was the work of Flaminio Bertoni, and the suspension was by Paul Magès. As for the engine, Paul Bercot updated the design of the old 1911cc D engine. At the end of 1954, the project was completed. In October 1955, the car made its debut at the 42nd Paris Motor Show. The most surprising thing about this car was its lines. The design was completely new. France was divided into two groups: those who liked it and those who didn't. But the body was not the only novelty. The hydro-pneumatic suspension provided unparalleled comfort with independent four-wheel suspension. Plastics became an important element, and many body parts were made of them. Other innovations included a single-spoke steering wheel, tapered turn signals and window frameless doors. The DS19 version was produced from 1955 to 1965.
