PKP IV Sm41 Diesel Locomotive + DSS PluX22
New for 2026: When Poland faced a shortage of powerful diesel locomotives for shunting duties in the mid-1950s, the Polish State Railways (PKP) turned to proven Hungarian technology: the M44 series locomotives. At a time when Poland’s diesel traction was still under development and many shunting operations relied on outdated steam shunting locomotives, the robust M44 offered a practical and relatively quickly available solution. Following successful tests conducted in 1957 at the Warsaw Odolany and Poznań-Franowo marshalling yards, ten units were purchased in 1958 and put into service as PKP SM40-01-10. These first M44 locomotives for Poland largely corresponded to the Hungarian base model but were already equipped with Polish safety and radio systems. Their areas of operation included major transportation hubs such as Warsaw, Gdańsk, and Wrocław, as well as regional freight yards and industrial plants. These locomotives were considered reliable, powerful, and easy to maintain—qualities that made them popular both in the depots of the time and on the industrial railways of metallurgical and chemical plants. Some examples have survived as historical artifacts—including SM40-01 at the Chabówka Railway Rolling Stock Museum. It represents an era in which Polish stations and switching yards were characterized by the distinctive sound and striking silhouette of these machines.
