A little history....

In 1787, the British fleet decided to buy a merchant ship that could sail to the Society Islands, as Captain James Cook called the island group of Tahiti, and bring back young breadfruit trees, the fruit of which was to be the main food. The ship purchased was the "Bethia," built in 1784 in Hull. The ship was overhauled at the Deptford shipyard and, as HMS "Bounty "was adapted to carry 300 breadfruit trees on the upper deck with additional portholes that allowed more light and air to pass through. Half of the saplings were to be delivered to Jamaica and the other half to the Royal Botanic Gardens in St. Vincent. It was a small three-masted ship 28 meters long and 7.6 meters wide, and had a displacement of 230 tons. The ship's armament consisted of four short 4-pounder guns on lavaliers and ten half-pounder follies (railing cannon), as well as small arms such as muskets. Command of the ship was given to Lieutenant William Bligh. The Admiralty ordered the hull to be covered with copper, as additional protection against ship's augers, and equipped the ship with three lifeboats. "Bounty" set sail from Portsmouth in December 1787 and arrived in Tahiti on October 16 of the following year. The crew of the "Bounty" consisted of 46 men, comprising 44 Royal Navy sailors (including Bligh) and two civilian botanists. A five-month stopover in Tahiti, during which many crew members lived on the island entering into intimate contact with the Polynesians, led to a dissolution of discipline. Bligh's and the crew's interactions were exacerbated by the increasingly severe punishments he applied, as well as criticism and hurling of insults, with Christian as his main target. About three weeks after the "Bounty" left Tahiti, deck officer Christian sparked a rebellion on the ship, as a result of which Captain Blihg and eighteen others were forced to leave the "Bounty" in a seven-meter long lifeboat. In April 1790, after Blihg returned to England, the British Admiralty sent the frigate HMS "Pandora" to sea to pursue the mutineers. Fourteen were captured in Tahiti and imprisoned aboard the "Pandora," after which they searched unsuccessfully for traces of Christian's group. On the way back to England, the "Pandora" crashed into the Great Barrier Reef off the east coast of Australia, resulting in the loss of 31 crew members and four prisoners from the "Bounty." Ten others were taken to England in June 1792 and brought before a military court-martial; four were acquitted, three were pardoned and three were hanged. The Pitcairn hideout was not discovered until 1808, when only one rebel, John Adams, was alive. All the others, including Christian, killed each other or died at the hands of the accompanying Polynesians. No legal action has been taken against Adams. In the 21st century, descendants of the mutineers and their Tahitian companions still live on the island. In January 1957, the remains of the ship "Bounty" were found off the coast of Pitcairn by writer, photographer and diver Luis Marden, who works for National Geographic.
