Touring car racing is where ordinary sedans driven around town take the stage to the race track and achieve results not usually seen. Touring car racing is a very popular category with a long history among motorsports. The rules have changed over time and were grouped by the alphabet in 1981, with touring car racing being held by cars defined in Group A. The scope of the modifications was narrow, but because of this, it became necessary to improve the performance of the basic production cars in order to achieve good race results. While Group A racing was gaining popularity, only a limited number of manufacturers were available to compete due to increased costs. The Super 2000 regulations, which went into effect in 2000, evolved from the Group A regulations and were designed to reduce costs. Based on mass-produced cars, the engine was limited to 2 liters naturally aspirated and the drivetrain was limited to 2WD for touring cars. It was adopted by the British BTCC, the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC), and attracted many participants.
BMW, which has been involved in touring car racing for a long time, also supported the Super 2000. The BMW Super 2000 touring car was based on a model with the code name E46, the 3 Series, which was revised in 1999 and became the fourth generation. The front-mounted engine was a 1990cc inline 6 with 24-valve DOHC and produced a maximum output of 250 horsepower with natural intake. This engine was mated to a sequential 5-speed transmission, and the drivetrain was an FR system driving 2 rear wheels. The suspension at the front was damped, and the rear used double wishbones to transfer the engine's power to the road surface.
The BMW 320i E46 Super 2000 competed in the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC) held under the same regulations since 2000. In the 2004 season, BMW 320i E46s were entrusted to BMW Team Italy-Spain, BMW Team Belgium-Luxembourg, BMW Team Deutschland, etc. Andy Priaulx of BMW Team UK won five races in the year, including the race at Donington Park in England, and won the title of champion of the year.
The Super 2000 touring car race became the WTC (World Touring Car Cup) the following year, 2005, and the BMW 320i E46 continued to play an active role in the WTC.
