Since its debut in 1972, the Renault 5 has been a huge success, and in 1981 a special and rather different version of the Renault 5 Turbo appeared, designed to compete in world rallies. The rear seats were removed and replaced with a mid-mounted 160-horsepower 1.4-liter inline engine, which was combined with turbocharger and fuel injection technology to deliver a top speed of 200 km/h and an impressive 0-400m time of just fifteen seconds. Renault wasn't content with a simple engine change, however, equipping the 5 Turbo with double wishbone suspension and ventilated brake discs. The body was also upgraded and had visible fenders; the use of an aluminum roof and doors, as well as a plastic hood and fenders, meant that the car weighed just 910 kg. Inside, the car featured a dashboard with no less than ten different counters and an interior with extensive use of leather. The Renault 5 Turbo confirmed its words and deeds with its first rally victory in 1981 in Monte Carlo and competed in numerous events during its career.
