The Leopard 2 was developed in the 1970s in the former West Germany, and by the time the more modern A6 variant was developed, it had received a number of improvements to enhance its offensive and defensive capabilities. Although the additional wedge-shaped turret armor and the commander's panoramic sight were carried over from the A5 variant, its newer L/55 cal. 120mm smoothbore gun was one meter longer than before, greatly improving exit velocity and penetration. The A6 tanks have been in use since 2001, and have even been fielded by other countries, such as Greece and Canada, with their own modifications. In January 2023, the German government announced that it would send Leopard 2 A6 tanks to the Ukrainian forces.
