By the end of World War II, the Pz.Kpfw.IV was beginning to show its age when it was confronted with newer Allied vehicles; one solution for German forces was the Panzer IV/70(A), which provided better firepower. To shorten development time, the Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.J chassis was used and paired with the L/70 7.5 cm gun, which had enough firepower to deal with Allied competitors; a modified version of the Jagdpanzer IV/70(V) Lang turret was used to accommodate the longer element. Between August 1944 and March 1945, some 270 were produced and entered service on both the Western and Eastern Fronts, and the Panzer IV/70(A) continued to provide valuable firepower even as the Allies relentlessly pursued victory.
