The German Pz.Kpfw. IV medium tank was the most produced German tank of World War II, produced from 1937 to 1945 and went through several stages of improvements. Ausf'hrung (Mark) H is one of the better known and one of the more interesting variants. Thanks to the typical protective aprons (Sch'rzen) mounted on the sides and around the perimeter of the turret, the tank took on a typical appearance and was often confused by Soviet soldiers with the heavier T-VI "Tiger." The resemblance was so great that for a long time in the Soviet army the tank was designated "Tiger" type 4. On the Eastern Front the Ausf. H made its debut during Operation Citadel (the Battle of "Kursk") and played a key role in later events. Panzer IV became the backbone of German armored divisions. It should be noted that the Panzer IV H was at that time the only weapon capable of fighting the Soviet T-34 and KV-1. The Tigers and Panthers, introduced in 1943, were not yet available in sufficient numbers to make an impact on the front. Overall, the Ausf. H can be called the pinnacle of German medium tanks, and all subsequent modifications to the Panzer IV were aimed at lowering production costs.
