The most important trade and transportation route in early America was the large rivers. Goods were shipped on large rafts along the Ohio, Missouri and Mississippi rivers to the port of New Orleans. With the invention of steam engines, steam ships with large paddle wheels could travel against the current. One of the finest and most beautiful of these ships was the famous Mississippi, which could be found in St. Louis and New Orleans.
