The first Soviet intercontinental jet aircraft, the IL-62, entered service in 1967. The IL-62 was developed in accordance with Aeroflot's need for an aircraft capable of non-stop flights from Moscow to Khabarovsk - across the country - or from Moscow to Havana, the capital of socialist Cuba, then an ally of Russia. For this reason, the IL-62M had a maximum range of more than 11,000 kilometers. The aircraft broke several world speed and range records, and in 1975 made a flight from Moscow to Seattle (USA) over the North Pole. The IL-62M served as Soviet Air Force One for several decades and was the leading aircraft of the USSR aviation industry.
