A monument to "racing cardboard": Trabant 601 S de Luxe
For eleven years - until the border was opened in 1989 - the Trabant 601 S de Luxe remained a car coveted by the masses in East Germany. Production in Zwickau ended for good in 1990.It's hard to believe that East German citizens were expected to pay the Zwickau automaker as much as 9,700 East German marks for what was then the most expensive version of the 601 de Luxe since 1978 - not to mention the waiting period of about ten years! For the average East German citizen, automotive modesty was simply unavoidable. If they managed to acquire a Trabant, the proud owners of this luxury version could enjoy such special amenities as a narrow tray under the already Spartan dashboard, as well as intermittent windshield wipers and an emergency windshield washer system.
