TheVolkswagen Golf I was first unveiled in 1974.
In the late 1960s, the management of Volksvagen AG decided to build a small front-drive compact car. The design in 1967 was entrusted to the Ital Design studio under the supervision of Giorgetto Giugiaro, and series production began in 1974 at the Wolfsburg plant. In 1976, a sportier version of the GTi was shown at an exhibition, and that same year the millionth unit rolled off the line. Three years later, 3 million units had already been produced.
