The Trabant 601 is more than a car - it is a symbol of a time and place of great significance in German history. As the most widespread vehicle in the GDR, it became a symbol of the East German automobile industry, and later a symbol of overcoming the division and reunification of Germany.

In the 1970s-80s, the Trabant was an indicator of the wealth of Polish families. After 1990, you could buy this car for 50 West Marks in most Polish towns bordering Germany. These were cars "abandoned" by German citizens of the former GDR, of course, these vehicles did not have documents, but this was not a big problem in those days.

Work on the Trabant 601 began in the late 1950s, headed by Werner Lang, and the first designs were shown in December 1959 to a ministerial committee. By 1961, 6 prototypes had been made as the Trabant P601 and were publicly shown at the 6th Communist Party SED congress in East Berlin in 1963. It made its debut at the Leipzig Trade Fair in March 1964, where it generated considerable interest among the citizens of the German Democratic Republic.
