The Cagiva Elefant was introduced in the early 1980s as an enduro motorcycle characterized by small and medium displacement engines. After Ducati was acquired by Caviga, commercial production gradually evolved to introduce a more powerful high-performance two-cylinder engine starting in 1985. The Cagiva Elefant competed against German and Japanese motorcycles in the prestigious Paris-Dakar off-road rally in 1987. The motorcycle was distinguished by a distinctive large fairing that covered the tubular steel and lightweight alloy truss frame. The air-cooled two-cylinder engine provided 80 horsepower at 8500 rpm and allowed the Italian motorcycle to reach a top off-road speed of 185 km/h. The motorcycle's design reflected a "typical" Saharan configuration, with a protective fairing, off-road Ohlins shocks and a low front fender.
