The first motorcycles were delivered to the Soviet Army by the Moscow MMZ factory in August 1941. The side chassis was equipped with a 7.62mm caliber machine gun, the trunk was used to store four magazines for the machine gun, and inside there was room for seven anti-tank grenades and a tarp bag for personal belongings. The M-72 was used for reconnaissance and defense, communications and as a field ambulance.
