TheV-2 was the first ever structurally successful ballistic missile developed by a team of German designers under the direction of Wernher Von Braun during World War II. The missile was officially renamed in October 1944 by Joseph Goebbels. The V-2 missile, designated MW 18014, was the first man-made object to cross the Karman Line (altitude of 100 kilometers), entering space. The name comes from the German word Vergeltung, meaning retaliation.
