The US Navy heavy cruiser "Indianapolis" was launched on November 7, 1931 and entered service at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on November 15, 1932. On the day the war in the Pacific began, December 7, 1941, as the flagship of the U.S. Fleet Reconnaissance Force, she carried out a simulated bombardment near Hawaii. In March 1943, she became the flagship of Admiral Raymond Spruance, commander of the Fifth Fleet consisting of the 58th Task Force and 130,000 Marines and soldiers. Leading a gigantic fleet, it took part in most of the major campaigns in the Central Pacific. In March 1945, she was severely damaged and returned to Mare Island for repairs. During the two-month repair period, its equipment was refurbished and greatly improved with the latest radars, electronic sights and new Curtiss Seahawks. After repairs, she loaded secret cargo and personnel for San Francisco. It sank on July 30, 1945 on its way back after delivering elements of the Little Boy atomic bomb to the Tinian base, torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-58.
