The USS Nautilus made history in 1954 as the world's first nuclear-powered submarine. Its revolutionary nuclear propulsion system made it possible for the first time to travel underwater for months without surfacing. In 1958, it became the first ship to cross the North Pole under the Arctic ice. This technical masterpiece fundamentally changed naval warfare and ushered in the era of modern submarine fleets.
