The final "clash of the eagles," which became a symbol of the struggle for air supremacy during World War II, was undoubtedly between the British Supermarine Spitfire and the German Messerschmitt Bf 109, two of the most famous combat aircraft in aviation history. Both fighters remained in service throughout the war, and both were constantly upgraded to gain an advantage over or defeat the enemy. While other types of aircraft eventually joined the fray, the Spitfire and Messerschmitt continued their deadly rivalry, which began over the beaches of Dunkirk in the summer of 1940.
