In what would often be a very personal duel fought in the skies over Europe between Allied and Axis air force pilots, the battle for air supremacy raged throughout World War II. But in the summer of 1944, a new "D" version of the North American Mustang was introduced. It could be said that the best fighter plane of the entire war was now pitted against the remnants of the Luftwaffe, a force that included less experienced pilots and older versions of the famous Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter. However, in capable hands, the Bf 109F Friedrich was still a deadly opponent.
