As the war reached its climax, the Luftwaffe's Bf109 fighter pilots began operations against Britain after being evacuated from Dunkirk, and for the first time found themselves at a disadvantage. With fuel for limited time over England, any mechanical problems or damage during combat at best resulted in their capture and certainly helped hasten the end of the war.
