The P-38 Lightning aircraft was developed by Lockheed in response to a 1937 U.S. Army Air Corps proposal. Its twin V12 engines were each housed in twin cantilevers that extended into the rear of the fuselage, flanking a central nacelle containing the cockpit and armament. The combination of long range, firepower and payload made the P-38 an excellent bomber fighter that made a significant impact when it joined the fighting in Europe in 1942. It was also active in the Pacific War from the end of the same year, and its escapades included the downing of Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto in 1943, providing a significant morale boost for the Allied cause.
