The Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye - an American all-weather tactical early warning (AEW) aircraft capable of operating even on older Essex-class aircraft carriers.
The twin-engine, turboprop airframe was designed in the late 1950s/60s by the Grumman Aircraft Company for the US Navy as a successor to the E-1 Tracer aircraft. The first prototype solely for aerodynamic testing flew on October 21, 1960, and a fully equipped aircraft followed on April 19, 1961 and entered service with the United States Navy as the E-2A in January 1964. By 1965, 59 examples had been built, with many problems accumulating, so it was decided to suspend the project. Grumman and the US Navy tried to improve the design and 49 of the 59 were upgraded to the E-2B standard.
Two E-2A test aircraft were modified as E-2C prototypes, and the first flight in this version took place on January 20, 1971.
