Bell P-39 Airacobra - an American fighter aircraft of the World War II period.

Work on the project began in June 1936 at Bell Aircraft under the direction of Robert J.Woods. In early 1937 the documentation was completed and on October 7 of that year construction began on the prototype, which was flown on April 6, 1939. An interesting feature of this aircraft was the installation of an Allison V-1710-17 engine in the center of the aircraft and drove the propeller through a long drive shaft. The aircraft was in great demand with the British, who ordered 248 units. the 179 machines that had not yet been shipped to Britain were requisitioned by the US Air Force after the outbreak of war with Japan. They were given the designation P-400 and sent to fight in the Southwest Pacific.
