TheMesserschmitt Bf 109, a German fighter, was one of the two primary single-engine fighters serving in the Luftwaffe during World War II. The aircraft was developed at the BFW (Bayer Flugzeug Werke) plant by Willi Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser in 1934-35, being a response to a competition prepared by C-Amt (Department C) of the RLM (Reichsluftfahrtministerium - Reich Ministry of Aviation) for a modern single-seat fighter aircraft. The first prototype was completed in mid-May 1935 and flown on May 28, 1935 by Hans Knötzsch reaching a dizzying speed for the time - 467 km/h. The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is a symbol of the Luftwaffe, with more than 33,000 of this type of aircraft produced in total.
