TheMitsubishi A6M Zero was the Japanese Navy's main fighter during World War II. In the second half of the war, the Model 22 was upgraded to the Model 52 to counter new American aircraft such as the P-38 Lightning and F4U Corsair. It featured 50 cm shorter wings with rounded wingtips, individual exhaust pipes and a top speed of 565 km/h. The A6M5a was produced with higher capacity belt-fed cannon ammunition (125 rounds) in February 1944. The Model 52 first took part in action during the final stages of the Solomons campaign in the fall of 1943 and fought in the skies over the Marianas, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Japan itself until the end of the war
