TheMiG-21 Soviet fighter aircraft, developed at the MiG design bureau by Artiom Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurievich, was produced from 1959 to 1987. It was nicknamed "pencil" or "balalaika" by pilots because of its silhouette.

The first example was built in 1954 and was flown on February 14 by Grigory Mosolov. The fighter was assumed to reach a top speed of more than Mach 2 at a ceiling of more than 20000 meters. Due to the heavy engine, the aircraft did not reach the intended speed. By adding an S-155 rocket engine, the speed of 2 Ma was exceeded, however, the range due to high fuel consumption was insufficient. After many modifications and a flight in December 1958, serial production of this aircraft began. A total of 18,000 were produced in many versions, which flew in the skies of many countries around the world.
