The Soviet-made Mig-29 aircraft was designed in 1972 to replace the Mig 21 and 23 with a more modern light frontline fighter. It was first flown on October 6, 1977, and "entered service" in 1984. Since 1989, it was used by the Air Force of the Republic of Poland.
