The Il 2 was designed shortly before World War II. It was extremely rugged, yet cheap and easy to manufacture. With its almost impenetrable armor and powerful armament, the aircraft impressed German soldiers ' it was given the nicknames Butcher, Iron Gustav and Black Death. However, the aircraft had weaknesses. This, combined with a lack of experienced pilots, led to heavy losses in the early stages of World War II. Despite this, the IL 2 was a successful aircraft and quite popular among pilots. In the later stages of the war, the aircraft's design was improved. The Il 2 remained in service until the end of the war.
