The Hawker Hurricane was Britain's main interceptor fighter at the start of World War II. By the end of the war, more than 14,000 of these aircraft had been built and served the Empire in all major theaters of war. The Hurricane was a versatile fighter, serving as a bomber escort during the Battle of France and defending England during the Battle of Britain. Later in the war, the Hurricane was superseded by other designs (in particular, the famous Spitfire), although it continued to be used as a bomber fighter for ground attacks. Production of the Hawker Hurricane ended in 1944. The Hurricane Mk-I was the first production model of this aircraft. It had fabric-covered wings and body, eight .303-caliber machine guns and was powered by the famous Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Rugged and reliable, the aircraft reached a top speed of about 550 km/h (330 mph) and a range of 772 km (480 miles).
