The mini-model Old Clock Tower from UGEARS brings a charming medieval atmosphere to any home or office. This beautiful wooden model of a do-it-yourself clock tower features a mechanism in the form of a tower with a clock face, movable gears, a movable pendulum, whimsical figures and a weather vane on top. Move the large cog to set the clock hands, pendulum and weather vane in motion. The weather vane is a trumpeter holding on to a banner flying in the wind. To make it funny, a man is suspended from the clock's rotating minute hand, holding on for dear life. Another man climbs a ladder under the clock - perhaps a cleaner or clockmaker? Behind the clock, a suspicious-looking figure enters through a hidden door - a thief who stores his loot in the clock tower, or perhaps a hunchback who brings his lunch back? Make up your own story by spinning the gears and watching the mechanism come to life.
A little history about towers
Clock towers occupied a central place in the life of medieval and Renaissance European cities. Invented in the 11th century, clock towers could be used to sound the alarm in case of danger, to summon people to services, weddings and funerals, to publicly display the wealth and importance of a city, and, more prosaically, to inform city dwellers what time it was at a time when most people did not own or have a watch. They were often characterized by interesting decorative elements and innovative technical solutions in clock mechanisms. Most medieval and Renaissance clock towers no longer exist. This is the result of the passage of time, wars or modernization, but there are still a few that have survived in European cities. For example, the Torre dell'Orologio in St. Mark's Square in Venice, Prague's astronomical clock with the procession of the twelve apostles, or the Zytglogge in Bern, Switzerland.
