The Prussian State Railways developed the P 8 type passenger locomotive to meet the growing demands for passenger and express services. By 1923, German factories had already produced more than 3,700 of the versatile triple-coupled locomotives. The P 8 locomotive was universally applicable and could be used on all types of trains. After the turbulent period of two world wars, they were used by almost all European railroad administrations.

After 1918, Poland received 192 locomotives from Prussian stock. From the very beginning, PKP's most important steam locomotives for local passenger transport were Ok1-class locomotives. Over the years PKP operated 429 locomotives of this class. The Ok1-359 locomotive was withdrawn from service only in the early 1980s. However, it served as a museum locomotive for many years.
