During the Russian campaign of 1812, the backbone of the Russian army was the line infantry. Soldiers were organized and bravely led into battle by command groups, which consisted of senior officers and non-commissioned officers. They were accompanied by ensigns and musicians. "I myself witnessed many staff officers and non-commissioned officers who, after receiving a few wounds, bandaged them and returned to battle as if it were a holiday," Nikolai Rajeevsky wrote in his report. Officers of the Russian army, who often had no Russian background (Barclay de Tolly and Bagration would be the most striking examples), fought for Russia with such passion and courage that they were admired even by their enemies.
