- New
In 1961, the Polish State Railways (PKP) purchased 30 four-axle electric locomotives from Škoda in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, which were classified as the EU05 series. This was a slightly modified version of the E 499.1 series of the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD).
For use on the Central Railway Main Line (Centralna Magistrala Kolejowa) Warsaw-Krakow/Katowice, which had been under construction since 1971, the EU05 locomotives were rebuilt in 1973-1977 at the Danzig overhaul plant by changing the gear ratio to achieve a maximum speed of 160 km/h. In accordance with the purpose of express trains, they received the EP05 series designation and orange paint instead of the previous paint scheme in two shades of green.
