In thecase of the SP45 series, this is a diesel locomotive that was constructed in the mid-1960s by theCegielski plant in Poznan to handle passenger traffic. To keep axle loads as low as possible , thelocomotive ,which reaches speeds ofup to 120 km/h, was equipped with two three-axle bogies . Theserial machines, with engines licensed from FIAT, quickly became a mainstay of passenger and express traffic on PKP's non-electrified lines. Starting in 1987, the process of replacing steam heating boilers with heating generators began ; the locomotives thus modernized received the SU45 series designation.
