The idea to build Titanic was conceived in the spring of 1907, and the launch took place in 1911. The chief designer was Thomas A. Andrews, who worked for many years at the Harland & Wolf shipyard. After the Olympic, Titanic was the next largest steam ship with four chimneys (the fourth chimney was a dummy).
