The ZiL-131 was the main off-road Soviet army truck of the 1970s-1980s, and its serial production began in 1967. The truck was characterized by high reliability and roadworthiness.
The basic model was mainly used to transport passengers or cargo with a payload of 5 tons.
These trucks were delivered to Warsaw Pact countries, as well as to many countries in Asia and Africa.
There were many modifications of the ZiL-131 for the Soviet Army and civilian use. About 1,000,000 trucks were produced at the ZiL plant between 1967 and 1990. An improved ZiL-131N model was produced from 1986, and later production was transferred to the Ural Automotive Plant. Small batches of chassis for various special-purpose vehicles are still being produced today.
