Renault began work on the AH series of trucks for the French army in 1939. One of these medium-duty trucks in the 3-ton class was the 3.5-ton AHN model. The prototype was unveiled in February 1940. Its design was quite simple, with a flat cab without a hood. Series production began in March 1941 in Boulogne-Billancourt, specifically for the Germans. Many AHN trucks were used by all German armies until the end of the war, on the German-Soviet front, as well as in Italy and France. A modified version of the truck, the AHN2, later entered series production.
