During "Operation Barbarossa," most of the German Wehrmacht's medium- and heavy-duty trucks were produced under the "Schnell Program." These vehicles had sufficient capability for the roads of Central Europe, but were not suitable for the cold and muddy conditions in Russia. Even the all-wheel-drive L-4500A 4.5-ton truck was insufficient. Therefore, the half-tracked L-4500R-Maultier (Mule) was developed, which had a Panzer II tracked mechanism. A total of 1486 such half-tracked vehicles were produced.
