The Germans affectionately referred to this great cannon by its size: the Acht-acht or eight-eight. Although this powerful weapon took more than two minutes to get into firing position, its ability to destroy enemy aircraft and tanks became legendary. In total, more than 20,000 of these excellent guns were built. The Flak 36 and 37 were almost identical (the Flak 37 had upgraded instruments and sighting devices) and had interchangeable parts. Although the Flak 36 was originally designed to fight aircraft, the high exit velocity and high weight of the 88-millimeter shell, combined with the ability to lower the shell exit to a horizontal position (unlike most anti-aircraft guns of the time), also made it an excellent anti-tank gun. It could even fire high-powered projectiles against ground troops and fixed installations, making it a very versatile weapon system.
