At the start of World War II, on September 01, 1939, the Wehrmacht was equipped with 11,200 3.7 cm Pak 35/36 anti-tank guns, which could effectively combat Polish and Soviet light tanks of the early period with their light anti-missile armor, but could not penetrate medium tanks such as the British Matilda and the Russian T-34 and KV, leading the Germans to nickname them Door Knockers. The Pak 35/36 was used on all fronts during World War II, as evidenced by the fact that in March 1945 the Wehrmacht still had 216 of this gun in combat service, with the remaining 670 stored in arsenals.
