Mobile but defensible armored cars were a necessity for the armed forces during World War II, and the 7-ton armored car fully met this need for the British: equipped with effective sloping armor, a fully rotating turret and 4-wheel drive, it reached a top speed of 72 km/h thanks to a 6-cylinder engine with 90 hp. The Mk.IV was the last of the four variants and had the largest gun, upgraded from the previous 15mm machine gun to a 37mm weapon. It was also the most produced model, with some 2,000 Mk.IVs rolling off the production line and into units in northwestern Europe and Italy during the final phase of World War II. The Mk.IV was used as a reconnaissance vehicle and even as a command vehicle.
