The German military built nearly 1,000 units of the light armored reconnaissance vehicle Sk. Kfz. 222. The vehicle's maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour on the road and 40 kilometers per hour off-road made it a valuable addition to armored units that needed a reliable reconnaissance vehicle. It performed well in countries with good roads, such as Western Europe, but had difficulties on the Eastern Front and in North Africa due to its poor off-road performance. Based on a typical heavy off-road truck, the Sk. Kfz. 222 was equipped with 5 to 8 mm thick armor and a turret-mounted 20 mm KwK 30 L/55 caliber gun and a 7.92 mm caliber machine gun. Although it was eventually replaced by more robust half-tracked reconnaissance vehicles, it impressed the Soviets enough to inspire their own BA-64 armored car.
